It’s a whale of a tale

In 2015 big data and analytics will be all about focusing on the most relevant data for insight into what will turn investment into return. In December 2014 Scarborough Beach (Perth) had an unexpected visitor in the form of a 30-tonne humpback whale carcass.


Authorities closed the beach due to the unpleasant smell, the risks of increased shark activity around the beach, and possible downturn in revenue to local businesses; something had to be done to remove the health risk and get visitors back to beach.  But something unexpected happened that caught the council and local trader’s off-guard, large crowds started arriving to see the sceptical in all its smelliness, they didn’t stay as long as a regular visit but they would come for a look at the whale then off to local businesses for coffee’s and iced cream.

This interesting event was collected by wireless access point’s setup along Scarborough Beach to offer public Wi-Fi but also monitor passive movements of visitors around the beach heads, there was a 30% increase of visitors when the whale was on the beach.
